- Unit 1: Understand children and young people’s mental health
This introductory unit will explore the concept of mental health and how society’s view of mental health has changed over time. You’ll study the relationship between mental health and wellbeing, as well as the prevalence of mental health problems in children and young people today. In addition, you’ll learn about the legislation in place to support the mental health of children and young people.
- Unit 2: Understand factors which may affect children and young people’s mental health
In this unit, you’ll learn about the risk factors that can negatively impact the mental wellbeing of children and young people, as well as how these can be mitigated. You’ll explore how puberty and development can affect mental health, understand the role of resilience, and identify ways to support at-risk children and young people.
- Unit 3: Understand children and young people’s mental health concerns
During this unit, you’ll identify the types of behaviours that may indicate a child’s or young person’s mental health is at risk. You’ll also investigate common mental health conditions that affect children and young people, including depression, eating disorders and anxiety. In addition, you’ll learn how to identify a mental health ‘crisis’ or emergency.
- Unit 4: Understand the impact of children and young people’s mental health concerns
Throughout this unit, you’ll examine the short-term and long-term impacts of children and young people’s mental health. You’ll identify how mental health concerns can impact children and young people’s family life and education, as well as the range of services available to support positive mental health. Additionally, you’ll explore the importance of being diagnosed and the barriers children and young people face in receiving a diagnosis.
- Unit 5: Understand how to support children and young people with mental health concerns
In this final unit, you’ll learn how to take a ‘person-centred’ approach to supporting children and young people with mental health concerns. You’ll identify strategies to support those experiencing mental health concerns and promote positive mental health outcomes. Plus, you’ll learn about a range of services and treatment options involved with children and young people’s mental health.
