Course Description

This qualification’s aim is to provide you with an introduction into the role of a steward at spectator events. Through this course you will develop knowledge and understanding of the key concepts which underpin spectator control, monitoring crowds, controlling spectator movement, communication, teamwork and health, and safety.

Course Length: On average, this course is completed within 5 – 10 weeks. But the more time you dedicate, the sooner you can complete it. The pace of the learning is up to you.

Free Course for: Anyone who is unemployed and aged 19 or over who has been living in the European Union for the last 3 years

How home-based learning works

After an initial digital assessment, you will receive access to the digital course, which is full of engaging and comprehensive content such as videos, quizzes, and more. You will be paired with a qualified assessor who will provide you with ongoing, friendly support. You'll then complete an online assessment in order to receive your qualification.

Course Content

1. How stewards control the entry, exit and movement of spectators at events

In this unit you will learn about controlling the entry, exit and movement of spectators at events, as well as how to recognise and respond to illegal and prohibited items, how to help customers with their problems, and how to deal with challenging customer behaviour.

2. How stewards monitor crowds and respond to potential crowd problems at spectator events

This unit will teach you how to recognise and respond to potential crowd problems and illegal and unsociable behaviour.

3. How stewards prepare for spectator events

Within this unit you will explore roles and responsibilities of stewards, how to prepare for duties at spectator events and how to check for and respond to hazards at events.

4. How to respond to injuries, illnesses and other emergencies in active leisure and learning

In this unit you will learn how to respond to injuries when first on the scene and how to follow emergency procedures.

5. Understand how effective teams work

Within this unit you will learn about the meaning of teamwork, the roles and responsibilities of different team members, how to work within a team and how to review performance within a team.

6. Health and safety in a work environment

This unit focuses on health and safety legislation and requirements in a work environment and you will learn how to recognise and manage risks, as well as gain an understanding of the different roles and their responsibilities for health, safety and welfare.

7. Fire safety principles

In this unit you will learn about different fire hazards and risks, as well as how to control fire risks in the workplace and manage the misuse of pyrotechnics at spectator events.

8. Safeguarding children and vulnerable people at spectator events

Within this unit you will focus on professional practice when safeguarding children and vulnerable people, your safeguarding and protection responsibilities, and the procedures for reporting or disclosing safeguarding concerns.

Are you eligible to complete this qualification for free?

This qualification is 100% government funded if:

  • You were born before the 31st August 2004
  • You must currently live in England. However, anyone living in the following areas is not eligible for funding: Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, Greater Manchester, Liverpool City Region, Tees Valley, West Midlands and West of England
  • You have lived in the European Union for the last 3 years (unless you have have been given a special Visa/Residence permits that gives you the permanent right to remain)
  • Are Unemployed and can provide evidence (Subject to eligibility)
  • Can provide Identifications and relevant documentation as required
  • If on the 31st of August 2021, you were aged between 19-23, you need to have gained a full level 2 qualification (e.g. five or more GCSE/O-Levels at grades A* – C / 4 – 9, one A-Level, two/three AS-Levels, five or more CSE grade 1’s, GNVQ Intermediate, QCF Diploma Level 2)

Our Home Learning courses take place from the comfort of your home! You can be enrolled on our courses whenever you are ready, and start when you’re ready.
Yes, the main advantage of doing our Home Learning course is that allows you to be flexible to choose the times that suits you to learn. Each course will have a recommended date to complete, with plenty of time to work through the units to gain the qualification.
The amount of time that you dedicate to the course is entirely flexible. Depending on the qualification, someone dedicating 15 hours of learning a week can complete their qualification within eight weeks.
All our courses are free for those who are employed and unemployed, subject to eligibility.
No, you don’t need to attend our training center for any of our Home Learning courses. All our Home Learning courses are assignment based, you will need to complete assignments for each of the units of the qualifications and submit them to your assessor.
